Photo Essay
Goldsmithing captured in photos
How is a masterpiece created?
This is a question asked not only in the world of art but also in goldsmithing—a craft that is both steeped in tradition and highly modern, where creative visions, precious materials, and the finest techniques come together to create unique treasures.
One such masterpiece was recently crafted in our studio: an extraordinary ring featuring brilliant-cut diamonds and an intensely glowing fire opal, meticulously handmade by our goldsmith, Silke. This creation process was fully documented in a unique photo essay by photographer Silvia Rechberger—from the first pencil sketch to the final polishing.
So, how does such a piece of jewelry come to be? Let's take a look behind the scenes.
The creation process
The Design
In goldsmithing, everything starts with an idea. In our design department, creative minds begin with sketches and develop a harmonious concept for the shape, proportions, and gemstone setting digitally. Beyond aesthetics, durability and comfort are key priorities here.
For this special piece, a glowing, teardrop-shaped fire opal was chosen as the centerpiece, framed by fine brilliant-cut diamonds that accentuate its radiance.
The 3D wax model
Once the design is finalized, a precise 3D wax model is created using a 3D printer. This serves as an exact template for the subsequent casting mold.
The advantage of a wax model is that one can carefully inspect the proportions before the piece is finished—allowing for small adjustments to be made if necessary.
The model is embedded in an investment material, which, when heated, allows the wax to burn out, leaving space for the molten precious metal.
The Casting
The chosen precious metal—in the case of the ring, 14-karat yellow gold—is melted and poured into the prepared mold. Something lasting and precious is created from glowing molten metal—a truly magical moment.
As soon as the metal has cooled, the mold can be removed, and the raw casting is revealed.
The Crafting
Now begins a particularly demanding stage of the work: the raw piece must be cleaned, filed, and shaped. The settings for the stones must be prepared to ensure maximum security.
And then, the moment finally arrives: the heart of the ring—the unique fire opal—is set. Fire opals captivate with their fascinating color variations, from glowing orange and golden tones to deep red. They symbolize passion, creativity, and a zest for life.
The Finishing Touches
After the fire opal and the surrounding diamonds are set, the ring receives its final luster: the surface is polished, a step performed with the utmost care to transform the raw casting into a completed piece of jewelry.
For Jewelry Lovers
Those who choose this special ring receive not only an exquisite piece of jewelry but also its story. The photo essay has been compiled into a bound book, which is included with the purchase.
An exclusive memento of a masterpiece of goldsmithing—and a symbol that real jewelry is more than just an accessory: it tells stories that endure.
Summary
